Learn Hungarian 1×04 – Regular vs. Irregular

Hello!

My name is Chris and welcome to the fine show of learning hungarian!

This is a fine language I must tell you and I do this video thing when I’m alowed to do when I have time, so probably inthe future there won’t be much… But, you know, this is world, real world!

So, I hope you are able to see picture over there and letters are quite big, because we are going to try to add some attachments over here, to these verbs…

Last time I told you that these are the simple rules:

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

And if you follow them you’re going to be able to do this.

Now let’s examine our words over there. These are fine words.
This is:

UGRÁL -jumping. I mean if you do this… Jump. I hope you enjoyed my little play.
ÍR – writte
OLVAS – read
BESZÉL – talk or speak

Now, the thing is, I’m going to tell you some sentences and we’ll try to translate them into hungarian. I’m gonna use these words and let’s try it.

First let’s use – JUMP. We’re going to write down the sentence, the hungarian sentence – “I jump”

If you remember, this word – UGRÁL is pronounced with very low pitch sound, not like BESZÉL.
Because BESZÉL is very high, so  in order to categorize this lets just look at this paper again.

Remember MEGY and VARR! This basic words will tell us how to categorize that one. So what do you think – UGRAL is more like – MEGY or VARR?
Well, I’ll tell you, it’s like – VARR. So we have this two groups, this is the low and this is the high, and we’re gonna choose this (low). Now, I told you we are gonna use “I” in the sentence, which is at the top. This attachment ( – ok ), because this represents the – “I”

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgSo, if you write – ok, after- ugral, then you get the desired effect – UGRÁLOK!
So, this sentence – UGRÁLOK  means – I JUMP.

Very good!

Now, please remember that, what I’m going to tell you,  in hungarian language there are some irregularities, like in english, so it’s nothing new. However, our next word is going to be an irregular word ( ÍR ), so this sucks, because we are at the beginning of our learning process, and it would be quite cool if there weren’t any irregularities, however, there is.
So:
ÍR – sounds very high, however we’re gonna have to choose from this group. Because somehow hungarians think that – ÍR is very low, which is not… But we think that.

Now, let’s try the sentence – “You write” , which is not really hard, because I told you it is from this group (low). Not this one (high), that one (low)! And it’s the second – SZ. Because I, YOU, HE, SHE, IT…

If you remember, so – SZ! And there we go, you write – ÍRSZ!

Let’s see the next. This is very much regular, so we don’t have to worry about it, we choose from this group, because OLVAS resembles VARR.
And, here we go, let’s say – WE READ!

So it’s not – I, not – you, not- he/ she or it,  but- we. And here it is:  we read – OLVASUNK.

And the last one for today is: SPEAK – BESZÉL.
And let’s try it with – they, because it’s not really hard.  For this one, I’m gonna let you think about it. We want to say – “they” and “speak”.

And remember, try to think about is it really high or low when you pronounce it – BESZÉL – that one. And then try to use the attachment.
Once again, we are trying to say – “they speak”. Now let me give you the solution. In order to solve this we have to remember this one and this one (-NEK , -NAK) also means – they.
If we attach it to a verb. Now, beszél, as we pronounce it, it’s quite high, so i’m gonna choose this one – NEK, because this is the high group. And let’s see – BESZÉLNEK.

There you go! If you figured it out, then congratulations! You have made the first step on the path to learn hungarian.

Please try to remember that hungarian language is quite hard because it’s nothing like yours, nothing like english however this may be the best way to learn it, or not, I don’t know, but this way is definitely free so you got no choice but to watch me.

I know that every learning process can be compromised by irregularities now today we found our first one, but not the last. But every language has it’s own rules so if we learn those rules we can process or learn most of the language, and only irregularities left behind. And we just have to live with them.

Again thanks for watching me. I hope, I sincerely hope that the show is getting better. And maybe later on, I can do this more often. Just please tell me that you like me, because everyone loves to hear that 🙂

Thank you for  watching me!
