Learn Hungarian 1×06 – Naming Things and Asking Questions

And welcome to the finest language course in the history of mankind… Maybe not.

But still, this is our sixth time together, and now, we are going to start naming things, which is very easy. Or very hard, it depends.

In order to be able to name things we have to learn two things.
First of all, we have to learn the equivalents of :

And second of all we have to be able to say :

in hungarian.

If you are like me, you like to know how things work.
The fact is, that hungarian language works little differently than english.

First and most important thing in the history of mankind – you have to understand that we do not only use verbs when we make sentences. We can use other things, like nouns or adjectives which is very hard to accept. But it’s equally hard to accept for us, when we learn english. So I guess this is a conflict we can not resolve.

However I can tell you some useful things.
Like – how can we say “THIS” in hungarian language and it’s very easy, we have an equivalent word, it’s – EZ.this-and-that-1

The next thing we have to learn is to be able to  say “Ő” or “Ön”  because
Like in english we hungarians also like to use “Ő” or “Ön”   in order to say something about general items or things.

It is very easy to say “Ő” or “Ön”   in hungarian language because we have only one word for them, and this is “EGY” – as you can see here.

Like I said before, in hungarian language, we can use not only verbs to describe something, and while you use – ” to be “ in many forms, to express existence, we only use the noun.

So when I say

Then I’ve told you everything.

We use EZ as an equivalent of THIS
We use EGY as an equivalent for “Ő” or “Ön”
And we use the noun,
and that is all.

But at the beginning I promised you that we will learn the equivalent of “THE” and it’s almost as easy as for us learning   “Ő” or “Ön” , because the rule will be just the same as in this case.

As you can see we have two of them A end AZ. Believe me this is the Z letter.untitled1As you can see just like “Ö” or “Ön” they are very similar so they are just like “Ő” or “Ön”  and they behave the same way. So for example when I want to say “THE DOG” – i say – A KUTYA.
But when I , for example, want to say – THE RAIN – then I say – AZ ESŐ.

With most of these words we should say A and ESŐ is the only exception here. So just for fun let me name you these things.

But here we have something which seems to be a problem…  Because fire and water are uncountables.

Now like in english language, believe me we are going to have many similarities along the way.
We will be able to watch the same behavior like they have in english version. So when I say fire, and want to say – this thing is fire, I don’t really say – this is A fire.
However, in the case of fire we have an exception but when the example is water then we have a very regular case. So I will not say – this is A water, I will say – this is water.  Now can you tell me what I should leave out in a hungarian sentence – ÉZ EGY VÍZ?

I give you a moment to process this…

Okay, you probably said the right answer,  I will not know, but I believe in you!

We have to leave out EGY. Because EGY is like “Ő” or “Ön”  .

Let’s continue!

EZ TŰZ – However I can say –EZ EGY TŰZ  because this is a fire like a camp fire. And it is very possible that we can do this.
EZ EGY FÖLD if I think of the planet earth. But if I think of the ground or the dirt then I say – EZ FÖLD.

And now, I will tell you something interesting. I know this whole class is very interesting but, this is going to be the most interesting thing , not in the history of mankind but in the history of this six episodes.

Because in order to ask questions in hungarian you don’t have to use an equivalent of – do.

Like when you ask questions in english.
For example – do you have a nice knife?
Or – do you have a dog?

Or we don’t have to do anything in question, like changing the order of words or something like that. So when I want to ask –Is this a dog? or – Is it a cat? Or something like that… Then I only have to put a question mark at the end of the sentence.
And I can read – EZ EGY KUTYA?

And yes…
I have just asked hungarian question. Teaching to ask questions in hungarian, it’s very easy.  The negative will also be easy. But we’ll discuss it in the next program. Until then let me ask questions with verbs. Because this is also easy:

FUTOK? etc…

As you can see to ask a question you only have to change the pronunciation a little. So I’m not really a professor of english language or something like that, so when I say you have to change the intonation, then I’m maybe wrong. But this is the closest word I found. To be able to ask a question, you have to change your intonation. And the tone of the last syllable should be higher. For example –

As I promised, next time we’ll talk about questions and verbs.

Thank you for watching me! 🙂 This is it!
